SYMOBIO develops the scientific basics for a systemic monitoring and modelling of the German bioeconomy with respect to sustainability aspects, also on an international level.

The development of the monitoring system is aligned with the goals of the agenda 2030 and is framed by a bioeconomy systems analysis approach. To this end, multiple research institutions in Germany collaborate on this project.

SYMOBIO is a research project within the concept “Bioeconomy as Societal Change” of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.

The key results of SYMOBIO 1.0 (2017  – 2021) were published in the pilot report.

The flagship report of SYMOBIO 2.0 (2022 to March 2025) was the Bioeconomy Monitoring Report.

SYMOBIO 2PLUS aims to consolidate the reseach from SYMOBIO 1.0 and 2.0 to prepare the way for possible continuous monitoring. The project will run from April 2025 to March 2027. The objective is to develop concrete, practical and specific suggestions for how bioeconomy monitoring should be structured and managed.
